What is prayer?
St. John Climacus writes: “Prayer is converse and union with God.” Prayer is talking with Christ and listening while He talks to us. It is reaching our minds and hearts out to the Creator and being in conversation with Him.
Why should we pray?
We pray because we want to be with God and know Him better. We pray because He loves us more than we can imagine and we want to love Him back (Matt. 22:37). This conversation brings about union with Him.
Nousology
“In Greek mind is Nous, in Russian Um (as in the Lord’s word to St. Silouan: ‘Dyerzhi ‘um’ tvoy vo adye, i nye otchaivaysya’, that is, ‘Keep thy mind in hell, and despair not’). This is the faculty by which man beholds God. It is the faculty that God gave man from the beginning, which ineffably enables man to enjoy God’s presence which was lost by his fall into sin. Jacob wrestled all night with the Angel and in the morning he saw God, and for this reason he was given the name Israel, that is to say ‘the mind which beholds God’. So the mind is that inner faculty which God gave to man at the moment of creation.”
